City of Trogir

Trogir is historic town and harbor on the Adriatic coast in Split-Dalmatia county. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its Romanesque and Gothic Old Town center. Well-known for its cultural heritage and authentic architecture, the city of Trogir dates back to 3rd Century BC, while the name Tragos first appeared in 2ndcentury BC.

One of the most important sights in Trogir is the Kairos relief. The sculpture shows Kairos, the Greek God of happy moments who, according to the legend, can only be caught if you grab a tuft of his hair, which gives you happiness throughout life. Kairos symbolizes being in the right place at the right time.

Trogir has its often-visited fortress, Kamerlengo, which was first used for defense but nowadays is a venue for concerts and shows. Forbes listed the Moondance Festival in Kamerlengo as one of the “Top 7 Coolest Festivals” in Europe.

Trogir has narrow city center streets, palaces, and residential houses which make for lovely surroundings for tourists to enjoy. International movie producers have chosen Trogir as a filming location for various shows and movies; one of note is Orson Welles’ The Merchant of Venice (filmed in 1969). The Trogir city center has also been the set location for these shows: Winnetou, Stealing Heaven, La Stradalunga un anno, Doctor Who, Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. In a more recent film production, Trogir was the set for the HBO’s show DIG. Trogir has also been featured in the award-winning HBO series, Game of Thrones. And of course, this prominent town has been the set location for many local movies too.

Not only is Trogir a popular location for filming, it also is famous for its craftsmen and traditional food. Boris Gena, a famous tailor from the region makes custom made suits for famous clients such as Bernie Ecclestone and Sebastian Vettel. One of Gena’s suits was even sent as a gift to U.S. President Barack Obama.

Traditional food in Trogir is similar to local Dalmatian specialties including fish and meat dishes (fish stew, pašticada) and traditional pastries, rafioli. Let us include Trogir into your next custom itinerary in Croatia!
