Plitvice National Park is a Croatian National Treasure

Plitvice Lakes National Park Water Falls

The phenomena of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage site of Plitvice Lakes National Park continue to take my breath away and fill me with joy.   It doesn't matter how many times I have walked the trails among the cascades between its lakes or gazed upon its waterfalls, every occasion further increases my appreciation and wonder for the magnificence of this force of nature.

A month ago, my husband visited Plitvice Lakes for the first time. Amazed by the crystalline waters, stunning scenery, abundant trout, beautiful butterflies, orchids, and flourishing forests, he can hardly wait to return again.  We walked the lower lakes and a portion of the upper lakes one day and all of the upper lakes on our second day.  The ongoing action of the rushing water’s gentle eroding of the travertine formation is constant and ever shifting, so that even overnight some trails had to be re-routed during our visit.  The park rangers are vigilant about trail integrity and are eager to share their knowledge about the hydrography, unique to this locale.

Two hotel properties we visited made overnight stays convenient, very pleasant and gave us the time to take in the entire park trail system.  We also had the opportunity to enjoy delicious authentic Croatian meals with wine from the region to complete a perfect sense of place.

Plitvice is highly recommended, offers a different experience in every season and is a “Don’t Miss Stop” on your Croatia itinerary.
